Aretha, Aretha, Aretha. How could you??? Aren’t you a champion for human rights? I’m so appreciative of your talent and you as a champion. You are a great lady. You did so much for other human beings and for women to give RESPECT. And then you do this!!! How could you sing this, one of the world’s greatest representations of misogynism?
Ok. Let’s deal with the music, first. Yes, it takes huge skill to sing it and every Tom, Dick and Harry wants to show he can. And every Thomasina, Daisy and Harriet, too. And every child. (I recall hearing ‘authorities’ on music back in my youth saying women were not biologically capable of singing. Ha. Ha. Yes, I agree. It is truly great music.
But what appalls me is that they sing it, regardless of its meaning!!!!!
Here’s the scenario: Nobody is going to sleep tonight.
HE wants the girl. So, he can’t sleep because he is very anxious, and excited that he will ‘get’ the girl. After all, the deal is, he can have her if she doesn’t guess his name before morning. (We won’t go into the fact that the price for her was to answer three riddles, which already he did. That’s it. He has all the right to have her. But he’s noble, so out of the vast ‘generosity’ of his heart, he will give her a second chance – guess his name and he will not take what is ‘rightfully’ his. Some chance. She doesn’t know him from Adam. Ha. Ha.)
SHE doesn’t want the creep. So she can’t sleep because she is trying to guess his name before morning.
WHAT!!!! This is expectable?????? In the culture, a woman is not merely a second-class citizen, she is less than furniture. It is not only legal but morally acceptable that the man should have her. Her wishes are totally a non-issue.
Come-on. There are enough people in this era who want to drag us back to the ‘bad old times’, and reverse our progress in humanity.
So, I ask you, Aretha, what does that say about RESPECT for women?
