What an absolute pleasure it’s been to spend time with your novel. I’ve enjoyed being on the page with Birdie in Canada and Scotland, past and present. An honest character, Birdie’s voice is strong and her heart is true. I found much to admire in her enlightened attitude and courageous search. She’s willing to make mistakes and I appreciate that. But the real test—the only one that matters—is that I found myself thinking about her when I wasn’t reading. I’d be making lunch or brushing my teeth and something Birdie had said to Mag would come to mind. Often it was a moment or two before I realized that I was thinking of a character in a book and not someone in real life. A very good sign indeed.

But all the praise doesn’t belong to your character. You write with an admirable clarity and purpose. Your prose is lyrical and the narrative strong. You have created a world of hope and hardship, with characters who cherish the deep connections of love and family.
